Orcas and Gray Whales - What a Start to 2025 Season

After several weeks of heavy rain, April greeted us with bright sunshine and perfect conditions for whale watching. In just the first three days, we spotted two pods of Bigg’s killer whales, two gray whales, and of course, plenty of seals, sea lions, and eagles.

One of the orca pods we encountered was the T099s. We came across them far to the south, off Orcas Island in Washington State. With calm seas and clear skies, the conditions out on the water couldn’t have been better. It turned out to be one of our longest trips ever, as we rarely venture that far south.

The following day, we were lucky to find two gray whales feeding right at the mouth of the Fraser River. They were identified as CR2383 and CRC2558. The latter was first recorded in B.C. waters just last year (2024) and spent a good amount of time around Vancouver. We're really hoping to see it return again and again throughout the season.
